Becoming an Official

For 2007-born or older players, the process for becoming an official will begin in mid-August 2019, when RJMHA will host an information night.

After the meeting, prospective officials will register for the ‘online officiating 1/2’ referee course offered by Hockey Canada . This costs about $20 and will take a few days to finish since there are a number of videos for aspiring officials to watch:  https://ehockey.hockeycanada.ca/ehockey/ClinicList.aspx?OID=3

Once they have finished the online course, prospective officials will be able to register for a ‘new level 1 officiating course’ (or level 2 if 16 years or older) at a cost of about $100. We have in the past offered an ‘in house’ clinic in Richmond at the RIC, and hope to get approval to do so again. Of course any ‘new level 1’ course would be fine. You will see a number of these offered around the province on the BC hockey clinics page. The links for these clinics typically appear on the BC Hockey clinics page starting about mid-August.

Awards

RJMHA makes several awards to deserving officials at the RJMHA year end recognition ceremony. The Mel Park Award commemorates a long-time dedicated minor hockey volunteer, and provides a financial scholarship to attend the BC Hockey summer officiating camp. There are also awards for Excellent in Officiating, and for Best New Official. These awards will be granted by the Referees in Chief.
