Richmond Jets Coaching Announcement for the 2019/20 season

Atom A1 Shawn McQuistin

Shawn returns as the coach of the Atom A1 team. Over his 7 years coaching, he has coached at various ages from Hockey 1 to Bantam at both the rep and recreational level as well as spring hockey for the past 5 years with the BC Kodiaks program. Shawn grew up in Richmond and has been part of hockey from a young age. His approach to coaching is to create a family-like environment that allows my players to come to the rink and have fun while developing their hockey skills. "Making hockey fun, in my opinion, is the key to getting the most out of your players and is what gives them the best opportunity to succeed."

Atom A2 Jim Seto

This will be Jim’s 16th year of coaching. He has coached Atom Rep - Midget Rep as well as several levels of spring hockey. Jim’s philosophy is about keeping it simple for the players His priority is having fun while bringing structure and organization to game play. Winning is not everything but developing and making the right decisions with and without the puck. Hockey is a team sport that he loves to participate in.

Peewee A1 Steve Robinson

Steve Robinson returns to minor hockey as the head coach of the Peewee A1 team. Steve’s recent accomplishments include PCAHA Coach of the Year in 2018/2019, Provincial and Western Canada Bantam Championships and PJHL league and playoff Championship with the Delta Ice Hawks for 2018/2019 season.

There are few things he enjoys more than coaching and building a team. Steve believes that no two players and no two teams are the same and the formula for success never really changes. It must be inclusive, it must be fun and it must be all about the team. When the team succeeds, everyone benefits.

Ultimately, his passion is rooted in the game, working with kids and team building. He hopes to provide all young players confidence, self belief and a road map to be an effective player and team member.

Bantam A1 Mike Ikeda

Mike returns to coaching minor hockey in Richmond. Mike is a graduate of UBC and played hockey there for 5 years as well as junior hockey with AJHL. Mike has coached rep teams from Peewee to Midget, assistant coach with UBC and a scout for the Vancouver Giants. Mike will bring his extensive experience to the Bantam A1 players to support and continue to teach them the game of hockey.

Midget A1 Derek Chichak

Derek has been coaching hockey in Richmond since 1994, where he began coaching as an “Introduction to Hockey” Coach at Seafair Minor Hockey. Derek has coached at every level of hockey from Intro to Junior B hockey since 1994, including 4 seasons as Bantam A1 coach with Seafair, 7 seasons as Midget A1 coach with Seafair & Richmond along with 4 years as Juvenile A1 coach with Seafair and South Delta and 2 seasons with Delta Ice Hawks in the PIJHL.

His approach to coaching is four-fold. First and foremost is to be organized. Layout a strategy for the year and present those expectations to the coaches and players, both individually and globally.

The second is communication. Give ongoing feedback to players, coaches, parents and the overall team. You must give them the good news but also the bad, while providing details on how to improve

Thirdly, "My approach is to implement and repeatedly practice skills and systems that are critical to the success of the individual player and the team.

Finally, have fun. After all, it is just a sport. Keep it loose for everyone involved and enjoy the moment. Work hard to achieve your goals and have fun to enjoy your success."
